Hang Loose

Like your very first attempt at a coconut hat - Hang loose! (But get that weave tight next time...)

I attempted my very first coconut hat sitting in the backyard of my good friends’ hale in Kapoho, a place that no longer exists ~ it had chattering palms and the best East-side, Big Island morning light…not to mention Champagne ponds, and their very own thermal pond in the back yard where we floated at night, watching the stars make their way across the sky. And according to our teacher Andy, it had good coconut leaves for hats! Mine did not turn out like Andy’s, with its tight weave and uniform edges, but I loved it. It still hangs in my house, reminding me of good times with good friends in a place that felt like magic.
