Hawaiian Quiver…

All of these were used to ride waves (even the papa hōlua… sort of). Down the street from where I live now rests the remnants of Kāneaka Hōlua, a stone slide used for high-speed downhill sledding. One account tells of a gamble taken between a surfer and a sledder; once a wave crested for the surfer, a spotter signaled the hōlua sledder and each raced towards a shack on the beach. First one there wins! I have always loved this story for how it captures the adventurous and sometimes kolohe nature of Hawaiians and it reminds me that mana or “flow” lives in those moments of fun, joy, and lightheartedness…mixed with a little troublemaking!
